Well, it turns out Serpentine Church on Liscard Road, where Rachael and I went for our First Aid training this week, is a longer walk from Birkenhead Park train station than I imagined! After a highly motivated morning march I caught up with the more organised/realistic Rachael, and soon we were all present and correct at 9.30am.
It was wonderful to discover that Laura and Charlotte from Be Well Learning, who do so much brilliant work bringing this training and many other sessions to the Wirral, were joining us on the day to update their own qualifications.
James Bassett was our cheerful, friendly trainer and quickly put us all at ease with his expertise, and then we were off on some theory and practical exercises. James has in the past done a lot of work with deaf people and takes any opportunity to advocate the spreading and teaching of sign language. With communication being so important in first aid situations it was refreshing to be taught by someone who thought a little bit outside the box and was able to introduce us to some basic sign language that could be useful in a whole host of first aid scenarios.
On our Facebook page you can find a great little video of Rachael delivering an abdominal thrust (formerly know as the Heimlich Manoeuvre) to combat choking, and this was just one of several vital techniques James taught us throughout the day.
Its great to know that Rachael and I have now joined the other members of our Make It Happen family who have their first aid qualifications, and we now have the confidence and knowledge to deal calmly with a variety of first aid, keeping our community and team members alike safe and sound!
